KOLLAM: The Kollam Revenue Divisional Officer, S. Thulasidas, on Thursday inspected the site of a clay mine at Velichikala Nedumbana Panchayat, which was allegedly polluting the area. The inspection was consequent upon a complaint submitted recently to the District Collector, B. Sreenivas, by the Environment Protection Coordination Council and the Velichikala Action Council. Mr. Thulasidas spoke to the local residents, inspected wells in the area and also found that the pollutants released from the mine had choked three streams in the area. He gave orders to the village officer to clear the course of the streams. Mr. Thulasidas informed that he will submit the report in this connection within two days to the District Collector. The Coordination Council convener, Odanavattom Vijayaprakash, and the action council convener, Basheer K, said that more than 400 houses situated around the mine stand threatened and that the mining activity has resulted in all wells in the area going dry. The clay dust emitted by the factory there was polluting the entire area resulting in health problems for the residents, he added.
