DMK protest

CHENNAI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Thursday said the June 15 demonstration of allied parties would focus on the non-availability of essential commodities in ration shops.

Apart from pressing for taking back the road mazdoors, the demonstration will demand that the Government give rice through the PDS shops at Rs. 2 a kg taking into consideration the drought conditions in the State, he said in a release. — Special Correspondent

Bail granted to Jayalakshmi

DINDIGUL: Judicial Magistrate Court-I judge J. Sumathi on Thursday granted bail to the Sivakasi woman Jayalakshmi and the then Dindigul Armed Reserve Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rajasekar, in connection with a case of suicide of his wife, Visalakshi. She committed suicide at her residence in Seelapadi in 2001.They were directed to appear before the court on June 30.

Defence counsels submitted the surrender petition seeking bail for Jayalakshmi and Rajasekar in the court here. Before granting bail, the judge asked why defence counsel did not file the petition for Jayalakshmi before 10.30 a.m. Counsel told the judge that Jayalakshmi had to appear before the judicial magistrate court-V in Madurai at 10 a.m. every day. — Staff Reporter

Vocational teachers meet

VELLORE: The State administrative committee and the general body of the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Vocational Teachers' Kazhagam will meet at the Seshayyangar Memorial Higher Secondary School at Urayur in Tiruchi district on June 11 and 12 to discuss crucial issues.

S.N. Janardhanan, general secretary of the kazhagam, said the need for immediate publication of textbooks for vocational students would be discussed. The other issues are the implementation of two judgments delivered by a Division Bench of the Madras High Court in June-July 2004 in respect of vocational teachers, taking the consolidated pay period into consideration while computing pension and due representation to them in Government examination duties. — Staff Reporter

Minority panel chief's

call to community

KANCHEEPURAM: The State Minorities Commission chairman, M. Prakash, has urged minority community to utilise the welfare schemes implemented by the Government for their uplift.

After a grievance meeting for minorities held here on Thursday, Mr. Prakash said the minority community people in some districts did not know about the schemes implemented for their benefit. They said they were not able to get any loan or financial help to improve their economic status at the grievance meetings conducted by the Commission. At the same time they said they did not know anything about the welfare and subsidy schemes implemented by the Government, he said. — Staff Reporter

Summer festival on Javvadhu Hills

TIRUVANNAMALAI: A multi-departmental exhibition, a horticultural show, a dog show, a marathon, volleyball, kabaddi and tug-of-war competitions, healthy baby contest, kolam competition, folk arts and music programmes are the highlights of the summer festival to be held at Jamunamarudhur on the Javvadhu Hills on June 18 and 19.

On Tuesday, Collector Satyabrata Sahoo asked the Health department officials to conduct a medical camp and the Animal Husbandry department officials to conduct a veterinary camp. — Staff Reporter

Kandhuri festival begins

Thanjavur: The Kandhuri festival of Jambuvanodai durgha at Muthupettai in Tiruvarur district began with hoisting of flag last night.

Earlier the flag was taken out in procession in the town and around the durgha. Hundreds of devotees thronged the durgha to witness the flag hoisting at 9.30 p.m. amidst bursting of crackers.

"Sandana Kudu" festival of the durgha will be held on the night of June 17. The procession will arrive at the durgha at 4.30 a.m. on June 18. — Special Correspondent

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 53.47 feet today.

The inflow was 1,270 cusecs and the discharge 900 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Fined

ERODE: The Gobichettipalayam Sub Collector, C. Samayamurthy, has ordered a farmer to pay a fine of Rs. 99,000 for cutting 165 palmyra trees.

According to the officials, without obtaining permission from the Revenue Department, Palanivel of Lakkampatty in Gobichettipalayam cut 165 palmyra trees raised on the Chinnampalayam Government poramboke land.

On a complaint by the Village Administrative Officer, the Sub Collector ordered Palanivel to pay Rs. 99,000 as fine for cutting the trees. - Staff Reporter

Eunuchs' gesture

ERODE: Members of the Erode Eunuchs Association have contributed a ceiling fan to the Special School of the Child Labour Eradication Scheme run under the National Child labour Eradication Programme in Asokapuri, Periyarnagar here.

The eunuchs said that they collected the money from shops in the town and purchased the fan for the benefit of 30 students in the school. - Staff Reporter

Old man fatally knocked down by lorry

Tuticorin: A 50-year-old man was fatally knocked down by a tanker lorry while he was riding a cycle at Thermal Nagar here on Thursday evening.

Police said identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained.

However, some documents kept inside his bag revealed his name as M. Gajendran and the ring he wore carry the letters `MG'.

The Thermal nagar police are investigating. — Staff Reporter

Sandalwood logs stolen

Nagercoil: The police are searching for two unidentified persons, who cut two sandalwood trees and escaped along with the wood from Alamparai Bhagavathiamman Temple at Padmanabhapuram on Wednesday.

According to sources, though the wooden palace, the erstwhile capital of Travancore Samasthan, is situated at Padmanabhapuram near Thuckalay, both the palace and Thekkekottarm near Alamparai Temple were being maintained by the Archaeology Department of Kerala.Security of the two places was handed over to a private party three years ago. Now, it was under the control of the Kerala police, who noticed two persons cutting sandalwood tress within the premises of the temple and alerted his colleague.

But the duo escaped with sandalwood logs.

The police are yet to get a complaint. — Staff Reporter

Cell phone shop burgled

Nagercoil: The police are on the look out for some unidentified persons, who burgled a cell phone shop at Parakkai near Kottar on Thursday.

According to sources, burglars gained entry into the shop owned by Krishnamurthy of Velladachivilai near here and decamped with 10 cell phones worth Rs. 15,000. The police have registered a case and are investigating. — Staff Reporter

Simple imprisonment

for milk vendor

Tuticorin: A judicial magistrate court at Kovilpatti on Wednesday ordered simple imprisonment to a milk vendor till `raising of the court' and imposed a penalty of Rs. 2,000 for selling adulterated milk at Kovilpatti on August 12, 2004.

Sources said a special squad under Kovilpatti Municipal Food Inspector, S Narayanan, checked the cow milk sold by the vendor, Marisamy, after the administration received complaints about the milk sold by him.

It was found that milk was adulterated and samples were tested at the State-run food laboratory at Madurai.

The reports confirmed the initial findings.

Kribakaran, Joint Director, Prevention of Food Adulteration, permitted the Municipal Commissioner to launch prosecution against the vendor. — Staff Reporter

Seven-year jail term for rape

Tuticorin: A 28-year-old youth was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by a Fast Track Court here for kidnapping a 16-year-old girl and subsequently raping her last year.

The incident happened on March 12, 2004 when Dharmaraj took the girl from Seiduganallur near here to Tirunelveli and raped her there. — Staff reporter
