Cheating complaints: Acharya questioned

Staff Reporter

Both Jayendra and Vijayendra to leave for Kalavai on Saturday

KANCHEEPURAM: The police interrogated the Kanchi Acharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, on Thursday afternoon at the Kanchi Sankara Mutt in connection with some "complaints of cheating."

A team of policemen, led by the Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bhavaneeshwari, entered the Mutt around 3.15 p.m. The team came out around 3.45 p.m. after interrogating the Acharya.

Responding to the queries on the purpose of the visit to the Mutt, the ADSP said the police had received complaints of cheating by the Kanchi Acharya and hence the team interrogated him on Thursday.

Enquiries with reliable sources, both in the Mutt and in police, revealed that some persons who had paid advance for purchase of land through Jana Kalyan (a social service outfit floated by Kanchi Sankaracharya earlier) were said to have `preferred' complaints of cheating.

The administrator of Sri Kamakshi Amman temple (managed by the Sankara Mutt), Chellapa, told reporters that both the Acharyas — Sri Jayendra Saraswathi and Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi — would be leaving for Kalavai on Saturday.

The senior and junior Acharyas (who were arrested in connection with Sankararaman murder case) officially returned to the Mutt only on Wednesday after they were enlarged on bail by the Supreme Court and Madras High Court.

The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, called on the Acharyas at the Mutt on Thursday and spent 30 minutes with them.

Later speaking to reporters, Dr. Swamy said it was not a surprise for him to hear that Sri Jayendra Saraswathi was being questioned by the police on cheating complaints. "When Goondas and Narcotics cases could be slapped on the persons like Sundaresa Iyer, the manager of the Mutt, they can foist any case," he added.
