Award scheme for students launched

Cash grants for first three rank-holders in Standard X and Standard XII public examinations

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday launched an "Award Scheme" to encourage the first three rank-holders in the Standard X and Standard XII public examinations. The rank-holders of Tamil medium would be given cash awards.

The student who ranks first in Standard X examination will be given a cash award of Rs. 7,000, the second rank-holder, Rs. 6,000 and the third, Rs. 5,000.

In Standard XII, the cash prize will be Rs. 15,000 for the first rank-holder, Rs. 12,000 for the second and Rs. 10,000 for the third.

Ms. Jayalalithaa handed over cheques to 11 best-performing Standard X and Standard XII students at the Secretariat. She wished them new records in education.

Each of the first three rank-holders of Standard X will also be given Rs. 1,500. For Standard XII students, the higher education and hostel fees and cost of the textbooks will be borne by the Government, an official release said.

Pension distributed

The Chief Minister also handed over cheques to the tune of Rs.70,307 for 12 construction workers towards pension at the rate of Rs. 200 per worker and arrears.

She also announced assistance to a woman who gave birth to triplets — two male babies and a girl in Kallur village in Thanjavur district on June 5. With a view to helping the parents bring up the babies, Rs. 1 lakh would be deposited with the Tamil Nadu Transport Development Corporation in the name of the girl child and Rs. 50,000 each in the name of the male babies. The family would get Rs. 1,167 every month by way of interest from the deposits.

Ms. Jayalalithaa commended the participants of the 12th All-India Sports Meet of Forest Department personnel. Ten sportspersons who won gold, silver and bronze medals were handed over cheques totalling Rs. 3.02 lakhs.

The Chief Minister asked for expediting steps to construct memorials for Rettamalai Seenivasan, Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, Vellayathevan, Veeran Sundaralingam and Thevaneya Paavanar.

She also handed over the Poompuhar State Awards to 20 craftsmen.
