BANGALORE: The BJP Kisan Morcha has planned a conference of South Indian farmers here on July 9 and 10. Farmers from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Kerala will attend the conference which is being held at a time when suicide by farmers is rising and the sector is riddled with a host of other problems, the Kisan Morcha vice-president, Radha Mohan Singh, said here on Thursday. Mr. Singh told presspersons that the UPA Government is engaged in undoing all the programmes and policies put in place by the previous NDA Government, particularly in the farm sector. Suicide by farmers is rising in Punjab and Haryana and the response of the UPA Government has been apathetic, he charged. Mr. Singh said the Kisan Morcha will demand the setting up of a task force that will monitor and ensure the payment of compensation to the affected families. Another demand is that the minimum support price paid to farmers to cushion them from losses must be calculated on the basis of the total output and not on an ad hoc basis. The fertilizer subsidy, being paid to the suppliers directly, must be paid to the farmers instead, Mr. Singh said.
