`Government supporting sandal mafia'

Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD: BJP national secretary L. Ganesh has said that the `sandal mafia' that ravaged the Marayur sandal forest gets support from the United Democratic Front Government in the State.

Inaugurating the conclusion of the `Chandana Raksha Yathra' in front of the office of the Divisional Forest Officer here on Wednesday, the BJP leader said it was the `mafia gang' that ruled the State.

It enjoyed the support of both the ruling and Opposition parties in the State.

The march started from Marayur, near Munnar, last week. It passed through different parts of the State, spreading the message of need for protecting the tree, which is facing threat from smuggling by the sandal oil extraction units functioning in Palakkad and few other border districts in the State. The march was led by P.N. Unni, state vice-president, BJP.

The meeting was presided over by BJP district secretary N. Sivarajan and addressed by state secretary P.D. Purushothaman, among others.
