CHIKMAGALUR: : H.C. Kantharaju, Deputy Conservator of Forests, said that a proposal for a Rs. 4.13-crore rehabilitation package for those to be evicted from the Sargod reserve forest has been submitte. Participating in a programme organised by the Chikmagalur District Journalists' Association, Mr. Kantharaju said the proposal will require the approval of the State Cabinet. Providing details of the rehabilitation package, he said 35 acres of land has been identified near Phalguni in Mudigere taluk. He said the proposal includes payment of Rs. 1 lakh each to the families who have lost their house and land. Following a Supreme Court order, 284 families, including 64 Scheduled Caste and 24 Scheduled Tribe families, will be evicted from the Sargod reserve forest by the end of October. The Geological Survey of India in its report has said that 946.39 acres of the reserve forest has been encroached upon. He also said that the rehabilitation package has been designed on humanitarian grounds. With regard to the Masagali reserve forest, he said the Chief Secretary has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court that the survey will be completed by the end of January and encroachers evicted before the end of May. Mr. Kantharaju said there is a provision to grant three acres of forest land if the encroacher is landless and the encroachment was made before 1980. As many as 425 such cases involving 859.36 acres has been recommended for grant, he added.
