ANANTAPUR: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University would offer B.Ed course to teachers working in the schools recognised by the State Government for more than two years in July this year, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, D. Ramachandram, said here on Thursday. Speaking after inaugurating the new building of the regional coordination centre of the Open University here, he said the university had allotted 500 seats for B.Ed for the academic year 2005-06. The course would be taught in all the 13 PG study centres of the Open University. The university was planning to offer 500 additional seats for B.Ed course every year in the future. The Open University was striving for quality education for all, Prof. Ramachandram said. While the students were spending about Rs. 1 lakh every year to study a few courses in regular universities, the Open University was offering such courses at just Rs. 16,000 per year, the V-C claimed. The Open University was also offering hotel management courses with the cooperation of SETWIN and drug technology and pharmaceutical courses with the cooperation of Dr. Reddy's Labs. It is also planned to offer Lab technician course from this year. Prof. Ramachandram claimed that the Ambedkar Open University was the first university in the country to offer science courses in distance education. It also introduced Ph.D in distance mode for the first time.
