Arrest comes as a surprise

Devesh K. Pandey

NEW DELHI: The arrest of Jagtar Singh Hawara, the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) chief in India, has come as a surprise to intelligence agencies and even the Punjab police as they did not have any inkling about his whereabouts for the past 18 months after he and two of his accomplices made a dramatic escape from the high-security Burail Jail in Chandigarh in January last year. All this while Jagtar Singh was evading arrest by frequently shifting his hideouts in Punjab.

During his interrogation Jagtar Singh is learnt to have disclosed to the police some of the facts pertaining to his escape from Burail Jail. He and the two other BKI militants, Jagtar Singh Tara and Paramjit Singh Pammi, charged with the murder of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, were lodged in the same cell at Burail Jail.

Investigations have revealed that the terrorists were leading a luxurious life behind bars as they had access to television, music system, mobile phones and toiletries.

Apparently due to slow court proceedings in the case, during which only half of the 150 witnesses were heard, the terrorists planned their escape from the high-security jail. During the morning hours when the inmates were taken out for gardening, they managed to get hold of spades. They then began digging a tunnel from their cell itself. To evade detection, they would cover the tunnel's mouth during the day and dispose off the soil through the toilet-pit using water.

The accused took about two-and-half months to dig the 14-foot-deep and 100-foot-long tunnel through which they escaped on January 22 last year, without attracting the attention of the guards deployed along the prison wall.

During interrogation, Jagtar allegedly disclosed that his two other accomplices remained with him for about a fortnight, after which they left for unknown destinations.
