BELLARY: Activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party, including Karunakar Reddy, MP, B. Sriramulu and Somalingappa, legislators, took out a "padayatra" from Kolur village to the Deputy Commissioner's office on Wednesday in protest against the police firing and demanded action against the police for opening fire. Five persons sustained bullet injuries in the police firing on Sunday during polling for elections to the Bellary Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee. Party workers from various villages in Bellary and Siriguppa taluks raised slogans against the State Government and the Circle Inspector of Police and demanded that he be placed under suspension. Jagadish Shettar, President of the State unit of BJP, described the police firing as the "most heinous act in a civilised democratic society." "What is shameful is that the Government has so far not responded to the incident," he said. Holding the Government responsible for the firing, Mr. Shettar urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to withdraw all the cases registered against the farmers. Mr. Karunakar Reddy demanded a judicial inquiry into the police firing and wanted the Circle Inspector to be placed under suspension. He criticised the district in-charge Minister, M.P. Prakash, for not visiting the village and talking to those admitted to hospital. He demanded that the Chief Minister announce compensation to the victims of the firing. Mr. Sriramulu and Mr. Somalingappa said that they will raise the issue in the Assembly and assured the people of their support. The Bellary Mayor, Somashekar Reddy, Ramalingappa and Mahipal were among others who addressed the gathering. Janardhan Reddy, president of the district unit of the BJP, read out a memorandum and handed it over to the Assistant Commissioner.
