TIRUNELVELI: : As a part of its ongoing `total sanitation campaign' to ensure construction of toilet in each and every house, the District Rural Development Agency has decided to reach, through telephone, the public, who intend to construct toilets in their houses. According to the Project Officer, DRDA, P. Ponniah, the DRDA was getting in touch with the public particularly the people in rural parts of the district through its officials and representatives of NGOs to press the need for constructing toilets based on house owner's income. While manufacture of materials required for construction of various types of toilets was going on in some unions such as Palayamkottai, Sankarankovil, Kuruvikulam, Tenkasi and Valliyoor almost all unions had been asked to sell these products at an affordable cost. As per the latest scheme, interested public may choose the type of toilet by visiting the `sanitary park' at the Collectorate or from toilet models kept in block offices. After finalising the type of toilet model, they should contact the Block Development Officers concerned over phone or in person to register their names for construction of toilets in their houses. The public may contact the following telephone numbers to register their names: Palayamkottai (95462 - 2572092), Maanur (95462 - 2485123), Melaneelithanallur (954636 - 284129), Kuruvikulam (954632 - 251234), Sankarankovil (954636 - 222398), Ambasamudhram (954634 - 20397), Cheranmahadevi (954634 - 260131), Pappakudi (954634 - 274540), Kadaiyam (954634 - 240428), Nanguneri (954635 - 250229), Kalakkad (954635 - 265532), Radhapuram (954637 - 254125), Alangulam (954633 - 270124), Keezhapaavoor (954633 - 250223), Kadayanallur (954633 - 240250), Shencottai (954633 - 233058), Tenkasi (954633 - 280318) Vasudevanallur (954636 - 241327), DRDA Office (95462 - 2500611), District Project Contact Officer - 94435-81383, District Project Co-ordinator I - 98653-46598 and District Project Co-ordinator II - 98425-81377. "Once the registration of names is over, total sanitation coordinator and officials from the Department of Engineering of the block development offices will visit the site and render useful suggestion on selecting the toilet model, affordable to the income of the beneficiary. The public may record their names at the register kept in the Sanitary Park instead of calling the officials over phone. Below poverty line families would get subsidised financial assistance for construction of household toilets," he said. Materials required for construction of cost effective toilets are manufactured and marketed by self-help groups at Kuruvikulam, Sankarankovil, Palayamkottai, Tenkasi, Valliyoor, Cheranmahadevi, Adaimithippaankulam, Thoppuvilai and the DRDA shopping complex near new the bus stand at Vaeinthankulam, he added.
