TIRUNELVELI: Members of self-help groups would be collecting garbage soon from every nook and corner of the city, said the Commissioner, D. Chandrasekaran, on Wednesday. Addressing a seminar on solid waste management held here on Wednesday, he said that 108.65 sq. km. corporation area had only 730 sanitary workers as against the need of 1,570 workers. So, the administration could collect only 100 tonnes of garbage everyday though actual generation of garbage for every 24 hours within the corporation limits was 144 tonnes. Therefore, the corporation had decided to form SHGs to collect garbage and do other cleaning works. ``Members of SHGs, 90 male and 30 female members, had been carefully selected after closely monitoring their work in tsunami-affected areas. Training this new workforce was going on and they would be given field training thereafter to clean the city meticulously," Mr. Chandrasekaran said. The Commissioner explained the drinking water schemes being implemented at KTC Nagar and Thatchanallur areas at a total expenditure of over Rs. 10 crore. He urged the people to prevent mixing of sewage in the Thamirabarani, a source of drinking water and irrigation for the people of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts. "Once the underground drainage scheme is completed, the perennial river would be free from pollution of sewage and human waste," he noted.
