TUTICORIN: : The municipal council, at an emergency meeting held here on Thursday, has decided to seek assistance from the State Highways Department to repair 21 roads falling under its jurisdiction. S. Daniel Raj, municipal chairman, told the council that the help was required due to lack of adequate funds to carry out the work. He said North Beach Road, Jeyaraj Road, VVD Road, Puthugramam Main Road, Railway Station Road, Gin Factory Road, Chidambara Nagar Main Road, Davispuram Road and Kurichi Nagar Main Road were some of the main roads, among others, to be referred to the highways through the district administration. `We want to see these roads either reconstructed or strengthened at the earliest,' he added. Soon after the council finished the discussion on the matter, A. Kottu Raja, a DMK councillor representing ward number 33, urged the Chairman to include Shanmugapuram Main Road in the list to be submitted to the Highways Department. The Chairman assured to do so. Mr. Daniel Raj said that repair works would be carried out at Threspuram Main Road on an outlay of Rs. nine lakhs during the current fiscal. `Of the total cost, Rs. 6.85 lakhs will come by way of State Finance Commission grants and the rest to be taken from the municipal coffers,' he said. Complaints regarding faulty drinking water supply and streetlight problems, raised by various councillors, got the `usual' reply from the authorities that it would be looked into at the earliest moment.
