Price crash hits tomato growers

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Tomato growers in Mysore and surrounding regions are feeling the pinch as prices have come down following a bumper crop.

The RMC Yard here is full of ripe tomatoes as over 100 tonnes of the produce were unloaded in the past two days from Bannur, H.D.Kote, Srirangapatana and Nanjangud.

As a result, prices came crashing down from Rs. 20 a kg in the past few weeks to less than Rs. 5 a kg.

Tough time

Many growers had a tough time in paying transportation charges on Thursday because of the crash in the prices of tomato.

Though Mysore region is a major supplier of vegetables to Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the demand has come down this year. Similarly, a bumper tomato crop has been reported from K.R. Nagar, which is a major supplier to Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

On an average, five trucks of tomatoes are transported daily to the two States from K.R. Nagar.

"Let alone recovering the investment, we will be happy if we get enough to pay for transportation," some growers said.
