NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party councillors on Thursday staged a walkout in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi meeting alleging that the ruling Congress was delaying the prestigious Civic Centre project. Raising the issue in the House, the BJP Councillor, Vijender Gupta, alleged that the construction work at the site has been held up for the past over two months just because the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, had not given a date for laying the foundation-stone of the new complex that would become the Corporation's new headquarters. Stating that there was no need for holding such a ceremony as the foundation-stone has already been laid in 2001 by the then Urban Development Minister, Ananth Kumar, during the National Democratic Alliance rule, Mr. Gupta alleged the final work order was issued on March 30 this year, and since then no work has been carried out at the site causing huge monetary losses to the civic body.
Approval
"After coming to power in 2002 in the Corporation, the Congress has put the project in the backburner. However, after getting the MCD's Standing Committee approval in March this year, there has been no work at the site. Due to delay, the cost of project would automatically go up. And the annual interest on Rs.636 crores to be raised for the project comes out to be more than Rs.50 crores, a whopping Rs.4 crores per month. So by delaying the project, the Congress is causing major financial losses to the civic body," he alleged. The BJP councillor said if a decision on the matter was not taken soon and work not resumed at the site, his party would launch an agitation in the Capital and expose the Congress on the issue.
