CHENNAI: The Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, has been cited as the first accused, among 11, in the charge sheet relating to the attack on S. Radhakrishnan of Mandaveli two years ago. The manager of the Kanchi Mutt, Sundaresa Iyer, and Raghu (brother of the junior Acharya, Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi) are among the other accused who figure in the charge sheet submitted to a magistrate court at Saidapet by a Special Investigation Team, which was formed to probe the murder of the manager of the Sri Varadarajaperumal temple, Sankararaman, inside the temple on September 3 last year. As in the murder case, Ravi Subramaniam has been cited as an approver in this charge sheet too. According to prosecution sources, the charge sheet has been filed for offences under sections 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), 307 (attempt to murder), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 450 (house trespass in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment for life) of the Indian Penal Code. The others in the list of accused are Appu, Kathiravan, Meenakshisundaram, Anandakumar, Lakshmanan, Bhoominathan, Kannan and Chinna Kumar. The final report of the police is being checked by the court of the XXIII Metropolitan Magistrate, Saidapet. Mr. Radhakrishnan, who was once associated with the Kanchi Mutt, his wife and an attendant, Krishnan, were injured when a gang attacked them at their house on Norton Street, Mandaveli, on September 20, 2002. Initially, a case was registered by the Foreshore Estate. It was later transferred to the SIT. The police obtained clues relating to the attack while interrogating those held in connection with the murder case. The charge sheet has not been taken on file by the Magistrate. After taking cognisance, the court will issue summons to the accused.
