CHENNAI: It was truly a rich harvest for the farmer's daughter. Success for M. Sakthi Priya, however, did not come from the agricultural fields, but at the Veterinary College and Research Institute in Namakkal of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. The Bachelor of Veterinary Science (2005 batch), who hails from an agricultural family in a small village near Namakkal, received 21 medals for her outstanding performance. She was the cynosure of all eyes when the Governor and Chancellor of the university, Surjit Singh Barnala, presented a clutch of medals to her at the 10th convocation of the university here on Thursday. Taking all the limelight in her stride, which came in the form of praise from the Governor, a thunderous applause and the popping flash bulbs, Ms. Sakthi Priya walked away with the bunch of medals and the folders containing the certificates, which she found it a bit too bulky. When the photographers requested her to pose with the medals in her hands, she had to keep the certificates on the ground before being helped by another award winning candidate.
No to PG studies
Later, speaking to presspersons, she said, "my father is a farmer, mother a housewife ... and I plan to prepare for the Civil Services. It has been my childhood dream to join the Civil Services and work for the welfare of the people. I am not interested in doing postgraduate studies." Her village Vaiyappamalai, according to Sakthi Priya, whose brother is employed as an executive in a private firm at Tirupur, is on the way from Namakkal to Salem. Coming a close second, in terms of the number of medals, was Sirivelu Prabhakar Madhu, who bagged 20 out of the 33 medals presented to the best students of the 2004 class of B.V.Sc. The students of the university, who completed their study in 2003, 2004 and 2005, received their degrees at the convocation, including 23 for completing their Ph.D. in Veterinary faculty and basic science faculty. While 160 students were awarded masters' degree, 349 got their B.V.Sc. degrees. Three candidates received the postgraduate diploma in business management. Presenting his report, N. Balaraman, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said performance of the students at all India competitive examinations and junior research fellow selections was impressive and the university had been selected for the coveted award for this achievement by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research for 2004. Animal Husbandry Minister and Pro-Chancellor P.V. Damodhiran took part. Director General of Uttar Pradesh Council of Agricultural Research Gajendra Bahadur Singh said livestock sector was emerging as a major alternative to crop production, which would have positive implications on nutritional security, soil conservation, bio-mass recycling and better returns to the producer.
