Power cut

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended on Saturday in parts of S.K.Nagar and Flower Bazaar between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for maintenance work.

Endowment lecture

Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre is organising a Prof.P.Devadas Endowment Lecture on Astronomy on Friday at B.M.Birla Planetarium, Gandhi Mandapam Road at 3 p.m. J.P.Lancelot, scientific officer, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, will speak on `Optical Telescopes in Astronomy.'

Books presented

A complete set of library edition of the seventeen volumes of `The collected works of the Mother' was presented to MOP Vaishnav College at Nungambakkam by the Chennai branch of Sri Aurobindo Society on Tuesday. Nirmala Prasad, principal of the college received the collections from P.Alwar, secretary of Sri Aurobindo Society.

Online quiz contest

The Environmental Information System Centre (ENVIS) of the Department of Environment is organising an online monthly quiz contest on `Green Cities- Plan for the Planet' for school students from class eight to +2. The questions will be asked from the web sites of the environment and ENVIS and also general environmental information from books and newspapers.

Students from Tamil Nadu are eligible to participate by filling the registration form available in the ENVIS web site (www.envis.tn.nic.in) by using ID and password.The name of the winners will be posted in the web site on June 30.

Kumbhabishekam

The kumbhabishekam of Ishta Siddhi Vinayakar Temple at Venkatarathnam Nagar in Adyar will be held on Friday at 5.45 a.m. A yagam will be performed in the evening.

The kumbhabishekam of Vallaba Chaturti Vinayakar temple at Gangai Amman Temple Street in Vadapalani will be held at 9.30 a.m. on Friday.

Youth killed in accident

A 23-year-old youth was killed in a hit and run accident on the GST Road at Meenambakkam late on Wednesday night. Meenambakkam police identified the victim as R. Dhanasekaran of Perambur.

Dhanasekaran was returning to his house along with a friend on a motorcycle. Opposite the community hall, a Tata Indica car hit the motorcycle. Dhanasekaran was thrown from his motorcycle and fell on the road . The pillion rider, whose identity is yet to be established was injured but out of danger. The car did not stop, but sped away.

DTH begins operations

Dishtv — the country's first direct-to-home (DTH) platform has begun operations in Chennai; providing another option to the lone metropolis of India to have switched to the Conditional Access System.

This DTH platform from the Essel Group promises 130 channels though the basic package deal on offer is 79 channels including HBO for Rs. 3,990. In fact, only in Chennai is HBO being made available in the basic package. This package includes annual subscription fees in addition to installation charges. For an additional Rs. 1,000 viewers can get access to 110 channels.
