TAMBARAM: Civic activists hope that with the launch of work on the modern integrated garbage-cum-compost yard for Alandur, Pallavaram and Tambaram Municipalities at Venkatamangalam near Vandalur, water bodies and open spaces will be cleared of garbage.

Authorities of the three local bodies said they expected work on the compost yard to be completed in three months. Though the cost of transporting garbage to the yard may pose a problem, authorities are hopeful of overcoming it. A weighing machine will be installed in the yard. Plans are afoot to create a green belt inside and outside the yard site.

With the compost yard in place, the municipalities have to necessarily implement source segregation in all the wards. The garbage segregated at homes would be taken to a transfer centre from where it would be taken in lorries to the Venkatamangalam yard. Further segregation would be made to shift kitchen waste to the compost yard while plastic and other scrap would be sold or recycled. About 250 tonnes of garbage is being generated every day in the three municipalities, which have a population of more than six lakhs. However, the most important relief for residents is that indiscriminate dumping and burning of garbage by the local bodies might soon be a thing of the past. In several areas in the three municipalities, garbage was being dumped and burnt in lakes, ponds and even parks and just about any open space that is available.
