AIDS: ``no room for complacency''

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Union Minister of Health Anbumani Ramadoss has emphasised the importance of remaining vigilant in the battle against HIV/AIDS, despite falling prevalence rate.

Though the overall prevalence rate is less than one per cent in India, the large population base ensured that the actual numbers are high; therefore "there is no room for complacency in our efforts to control HIV/AIDS," Dr. Anbumani said.

He was speaking at the Centre for Strategic and International studies, Washington, during the Task Force on HIV/AIDS conference on Tuesday. The Minister also went on to elaborate on the future challenges that the nation is likely to face while combating the epidemic.

"We are aware that the spread of HIV/AIDS can only be reversed through re-enforcing our agenda on prevention across every segment of the population, while simultaneously strengthening the continuum between prevention, care and support," Dr. Anbumani said at the conference.

Reaching out to young adults will be top on the agenda of the Indian government as also improving access to voluntary care and testing centres, enhancing availability of treatment measures.

Strengthening the public-private partnership by involving the corporate sector, particularly for workplace intervention and provisioning of care, treatment and support for people living with HIV/AIDS is also on the cards.
