JD(U) stands by Advani

NEW DELHI: The Janata Dal (United) on Thursday expressed concern over L.K. Advani's resignation as Bharatiya Janata Party president and said it supported his remarks on Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

"Whatever Mr. Advani said in Pakistan about Jinnah was a correct statement not only for Indo-Pak relations but also for the internal politics of this country. The JD(U) supports his statement," said Rajya Sabha member and former Minister, Digvijay Singh. He was briefing newsmen after a two- hour meeting here of central party office-bearers and MPs.

JD(U) president and National Democratic Alliance convener George Fernandes chaired the meeting.z The party would meet again on Friday to firm up its stand on the issue.

General secretary K.C. Tyagi said the meeting unanimously expressed its "displeasure" over the statements made by the BJP affiliates against Mr. Advani. The JD (U) was watching the developments in the BJP.

Earlier, senior leader Nitish Kumar, who returned from Patna, met Mr. Advani at his residence.

Among others who attended the meeting were Sharad Yadav, Nitish Kumar, Prabhunath Singh and Rajiv Kumar Lallan.
