Two Uttara Kannada projects yet to get approval from Govt.

Correspondent

KARWAR: A Rs. 19.48-crore Kharland Development Scheme proposed by the Uttara Kannada Zilla Panchayat and Rs.7.26-crore master plan prepared by the Minor Irrigation Department submitted to the Government in August last are yet to be approved.

Kharlands are long stretches of low-lying alluvial river basins of the coastal plain subjected to seawater intrusion. Ramakrishna Moolimane, President of the zilla panchayat, told The Hindu that while the zilla panchayat's scheme will benefit 4,926 hectares of land in Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar and Bhatkal taluks, the master plan will help protect 7,206 hectares of kharland. The zilla panchayat's scheme envisages construction of bunds to prevent sea water from entry the land and installation of sluice gates to regulate the water flow in kharlands and construction of a drainage system to drain saline water during paddy cultivation, he said. Mr. Moolimane said he has appealed to the Revenue Minister, M.P. Prakash, and the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to inspect the areas damaged by the tsunami and take steps to approve these projects. The matter has been brought to the notice of the district in-charge Minister, R.V. Deshpande. However, nothing has been done so far. Though the Chief Minister has promised Rs. 2.5 crores for relief works in areas affected by the tsunami, funds are yet to be released.
