Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons, met the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, at his residence `Anugraha' in Bangalore on Friday.
BANGALORE: The Karnataka Government on Friday extended an open invitation to Tata Sons to consider the State as an important investment destination. Ratan Tata, chairman of the group, called on the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Minister for Industries and Civil Aviation, P.G.R. Sindhia. Although termed a courtesy call, it was obvious that he was seeking to hold discussions with the Government on investments. The Tatas have not made any investment in the State for over a decade. Sources in the Government told The Hindu here that the Chief Minister sought investments in passenger vehicles manufacturing, small car manufacturing, steel sector and the power sector. Mr. Ratan Tata agreed to come back with a team of senior executives. The Chief Minister and the Industries Minister thanked Mr. Tata for coordinating with the Singapore Government while setting up the Information Technology Park on the outskirts of Bangalore. Tata Sons, which has a big presence in the State, retracted after the International Airport project at Devanahalli fell through in the initial stages. Mr. Ratan Tata told presspersons that his group was aware of the State, particularly Bangalore, as an investment destination. The group planned huge investments in industries such as car manufacturing, cement production and telecommunication sector. Mr. Dharam Singh and Mr. Sindhia were courteous with him and to his idea of expanding his group in the State.It is stated that the Tata Sons is looking at mining, information technology, and biotechnology.
