Norms for admission to professional courses

Lots to be last resort in case of tie in ranks

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has formulated a set of new guidelines for admission to professional courses for the year 2005-06. The norms will form the touchstone for admissions to B.E/B.Tech and allied courses, M.B.B.S, B.D.S, B. Pharm. and allied courses, B. Sc. (Agriculture) and allied courses, B.V.Sc., B.F.Sc., undergraduate Law and similar courses.

Reiterating the earlier decisions to scrap the Common Entrance Test and discontinue the system of improvement examinations from the current academic year, the Government, in a G.O. issued here on Friday, said it proposed to make the admissions by ranking the students based on the marks obtained by them in the Plus Two examination and the rule of reservation. This was to ensure that meritorious students got their choice of colleges and courses. The single window system of counselling would be continued.

No relief for CBSE students

The order does not include any provision for neutralisation of marks or any scaling of marks for CBSE students.

An order of priority would determine the rank of students if two or more candidates obtained equal aggregate marks (tie) in the related subjects in Plus Two. For engineering and allied courses, medicine and allied courses and B.Sc (Agriculture) and allied courses, ranking would be done successively based on the percentage of marks scored in individual subjects (mathematics for engineering and biology or botany and zoology combined for medicine and agriculture), to be followed by the fourth optional subject under Part III, the date of birth and if a tie still persisted, by drawing of lots.

For B. V. Sc., B. F. Sc and allied courses, in the academic stream, ranking would be done successively based on percentage of marks in biology or botany and zoology taken together, chemistry, physics, maths, date of birth and by lots. For the vocational stream (B.V.Sc.) ranking would be successively computed based on percentage of marks in biology, in vocational theory (poultry or dairying), practical-I, practical-II, date of birth and by lots.

For Vocational Stream (B.F.Sc.) the same pattern would be followed with percentage of marks in biology first, followed in order by vocational theory (fisheries), practical-I, practical-II, date of birth and by lots.

Marks for the improvement examinations taken during 2005-06 will not be taken into account and if such candidates sought admission to professional courses, they could do so only on the basis of marks obtained in the first attempt. Orders for admission to Law courses would be issued separately, the order said.
