Cong. terms Advani quit as "soap opera"

Special Correspondent

"Nation has no option but to wait till the next instalment"

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday described BJP president L.K. Advani's withdrawal of resignation from the post as the close of another chapter in the "great Indian tamasha."

"This is a soap opera which only ends to restart again in the near future. The nation has no option but to wait during the commercial break till the next instalment of this tragi-comedy," Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said. The "man of iron'' has been shown to be "less than a man of straw. Perhaps, the threat perception of Mr. Advani generated a real fear that his resignation might actually be accepted."

"A split personality"

Earlier, at a routine party briefing, Mr. Singhvi described the BJP as a "split personality, sometimes converting itself from a single-headed entity to a multi-headed hydra." Who will emerge victorious in this tussle: "Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde," he asked.

He felt the Leader of the Opposition had been reduced to a lame-duck leader. The developments in the BJP in the last couple of days had reinforced the "open and well-known secret of Indian political life" that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh exercised remote control [over the BJP] and "wields power without accountability or responsibility," Mr. Singhvi said.
