HYDERABAD: Paritala Sunita took oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing Penukonda constituency in Anantapur district, here on Friday.

The Speaker, K. R. Suresh Reddy, administered the oath to the newly elected Telugu Desam Party (TDP) legislator and widow of the slain MLA from Penukonda, Paritala Ravindra. She had won the byelection on June 2 defeating the Congress nominee, Sriramulu, by a margin of over 18,000 votes.

Accompanied by the senior TDP leaders -- Ayyanna Patrudu, K. Harishwar Reddy, P. Keshav, Shoba Nagi Reddy -- and others from Anantapur district, Ms. Sunita took the oath in Committee Hall-1. She took the oath in Telugu in the name of her husband and later God.

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Sunita gave credit for the victory to the party workers. She levelled certain allegations against the Rayalaseema IG, R. P. Meena, who was transferred on Thursday.

Ex gratia given

Earlier, Ms. Sunita was felicitated at the party office, NTR Trust Bhavan. The TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, who addressed the workers from Penukonda assured them that the party would stand by them in facing any adversity. He complimented them for giving a fitting reply to the Congress. He also handed over ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs to the next of the kin of the six party workers who were killed in police firing.
