Dyeing units asked not to work at weekend

Staff Reporter

"Owners should install electromagnetic flow meter at their units"

CHENNAI: : The Madras High Court has ordered 730 dyeing and bleaching units of the Tiruppur and Erode regions not to operate on Saturdays and Sundays.

"Though it is desirable to close the units till the depletion {lcub}of the Orathapalayam dam{rcub} process is completed, we deem it fit to direct the units to run only for a period of five days in a week — Monday to Friday," said a Division Bench, comprising Justice M. Karpagavinayagam and Justice C. Nagappan, at a special sitting on Friday. It also asked the owners to install measuring device, electromagnetic flow meter, at their units.

The 12-metre Orathapalayam dam is full with millions of litres of water that turned poisonous owing to the untreated trade effluents let out by these polluting units. As per an earlier order, 3.5 million cubic feet (40 cusecs) is being released daily for five days continuously. After every five days, the release is suspended for seven days.

The Bench had asked the units to file individual affidavits detailing the measures taken to implement government's directives.
