Man kills wife, commits suicide

TIRUCHI: A 28-year-old man allegedly hacked his wife to death and committed suicide on Thursday night at Anaikalpatti near Kattuputhur.

The police here said that Ravi, suspecting his 24-year-old wife Janaki's character, allegedly attacked her with an `aruval' in front of his house at Anaikalpatti killing her on the spot. His mother, Aravayee (50), who attempted to prevent Ravi from attacking his wife, and Manish, Ravi's four-year-old son, were injured in the melee.

The sources said that after killing his wife, Ravi went into the house and allegedly hung himself. The Kattuputhur police have registered a case.

House burgled

TIRUCHI: An unidentified person entered a house at Peruvalanallur within the Lalgudi police station limits in the district and allegedly stole 26.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery worth Rs.1.05 lakhs on Wednesday night. The matter was reported to the police on Thursday by Nanthakumar, the complainant.

Fatal fall

A retired railway employee died after he slipped and fell from a passenger train while it was about to halt at the Golden Rock railway station here on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Muthusamy (75) of Lalgudi. Muthusamy was coming to Golden Rock from Lalgudi to attend a wedding when the accident occurred.

Stress on protection of environment

A series of programmes on environment protection were organised as part of the World Environment Week celebrations held at Goldenrock railway workshop here recently.

The role of the workshop employees in protecting the environment, sustainable development besides maintaining hygiene at the work spot as well as at the place of stay were also underscored during the celebrations.

A release from the workshop on Wednesday said a hand-note containing salient points to be remembered by the employees to tackle environment pollution at the workshop was distributed.

The Chief Workshop Manager, G. R. K. Raju, made a multi-media presentation on `Green Productivity' to the workshop employees.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur dam stood at 53.47 feet on Friday. The inflow was 1,026 cusecs and the discharge 876 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
