KERC ombudsman appointed

Bangalore: The State Government has appointed B.T. Jnaneswar as ombudsman of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC). He assumed office in the presence of officials of the commission on Friday.

According to a press release, the appointment has been made under the Electricity Act, 2003 and Regulation 15 of the KERC Act (Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum and Ombudsman), 2004. He will receive representations against orders of the grievance redressal forum and help settle complaints through conciliation and mediation or by passing an award. — Staff Reporter

Cassette of Kodava songs

Madikeri: The Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy here has invited unpublished Kodava songs to include them in a cassette to be brought out soon. The registrar of the academy, K. Damodar, said here on Saturday that those who have compiled Kodava songs can send them to the president of the academy at Scouts and Guides Building, District Stadium, Madikeri, on or before July 10.

The academy also intends to organise a Kodava drama festival this year in two categories: senior and junior. The dramas should have a social theme and should not have been published or broadcast. Entries should be sent to the president of the academy by July 15, Mr. Damodar said. — Staff Correspondent

Farmer commits

suicide

TUMKUR: A farmer committed suicide at Kodigehalli in Honnavalli police station limits in Tumkur district. His body was found hanging from a tree in his fields on Saturday.

The police identified him as Basappa, 58, a resident of that village. The police said Basappa's father, Shivanna, who died a few years ago, reportedly borrowed Rs. 17,500 from a bank in 1986. The bank recently notified Basappa that he had to repay Rs. 73,000. This came as a shock to him.

The police said Basappa owned about five acres on which he had raised coconut palms. The palms were affected by black-headed caterpillars. — Staff Correspondent

Two arrested

for selling ganja

TUMKUR: The police arrested two persons on the charge of selling ganja here on Saturday. The police said Billi alias Rafiq Imam, 35, from Bangalore, and Annapurad Gopalaiah, 50, from Halepalya, were caught selling ganja in a park at Gandhinagar in Tiptur in the district.

The police said 900 gm of ganja was recovered from the arrested persons. They were produced before a judge, who remanded them in judicial custody till June 23. — Staff Correspondent

Lakshman Rau

mourned

BANGALORE: The Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, K. Rahman Khan, has mourned the death of N. Lakshman Rau, former administrator of the erstwhile Bangalore City Municipal Corporation and former Secretary to the Government. The people of Bangalore will always remember Mr. Rau's contribution to the beautification of the city, Mr. Khan said in a message.

He also mourned the death of D.A. Pandu, former secretary, R.V. Educational Institutions.

Bangalore: The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, has expressed shock over the death of D.A. Pandu, founder of the Rashtreeya Vidyalaya educational institutions.

MYSORE: The Department of Posts has reorganised its functioning to ensure early delivery of mail in Mysore city. According to a statement from the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Mysore Division, SpeedPost and ordinary mail will reach the addressees earlier than the present timing of 8.30 a.m. for SpeedPost and 11.30 a.m. for ordinary mail. Postmen, who deliver letters, will also be in possession of all types of postal stamps, stationary and BSNL recharge coupons. — Staff Correspondent.

Bidar: The District Fast Track Court sentenced a man to three years and six months imprisonment on charges of raping a woman in Khashempur (P) in Bidar taluk. The judge, P.G.M. Patil, found Jagannath guilty under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code. He has asked the accused to pay Rs. 1,000 to the victim. The Bagadal police had filed a chargesheet. Bidar: The Fast Track Court sentenced a woman to six months' imprisonment for killing her child. The judge, P.G.M. Patil found Devubai of Eklar Tanda guilty under Sections 302, 307 and 309 of the Indian Penal Code. The Chintaki police had filed a chargesheet saying that the accused had mixed pesticides in her children's food. One of the children died. Vaijanath Patil pleaded for the State. — Staff Correspondent

Training camp in photography

Udupi: The Rural Development and Self Employment Training (RUDSET) Institute, Udupi, will conduct a 21-day free training camp in photography and videography in August. According to a press release, unemployed youth in the age group of 18 to 35 years from Shimoga, Uttar Kannada and Udupi districts, who can read and write Kannada, can apply for the course. MANGLORE : The Vice-President of State unit of Janata Dal (United), M. Ballal, criticised the State and Union Governments for failing to empower backward classes and minorities. Presiding over a convention of the backward classes' wing of the party, Mr. Ballal said facilities extended by the Government are inadequate and urged the Government to do more.

MANGALORE : The Department of Public Instruction, Government of Karnataka, has granted permission to the Sri Gopalakrishna English Medium High School, Bilinele in Puttur taluk, to start eighth standard for the academic year 2005-06 as well as ninth and tenth standards in the subsequent academic years.

Infant dies

MANIPAL: A nine-month-old child died, allegedly due to the negligence of the doctor and nurses of a private hospital on Saturday morning.

According to a complaint filed by Ravindra Acharya, the father of the child and resident of Hiriyadka, the infant died due to negligence of the doctor and nurses of the hospital.

A case has been booked under Section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code, the police said. — Staff Correspondent

MANIPAL: A woman committed suicide at Badagabettu village on Saturday.

`Probe functioning

of Govt. Press'

TUMKUR: C. Chennigappa, Minister for Sericulture and Minister for Tumkur District, has said he will request the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to place under suspension the employees of the Government Press here who have been accused of assaulting eight journalists at the press premises on Tuesday. Addressing presspersons on Friday after inspecting the press, Mr. Chennigappa said he will also request the Chief Minister to order a probe by the Corps of Detectives into the allegations against senior officials of the press and alleged irregularities in its functioning. — Staff Correspondent

Man arrested on

theft charge

TUMKUR: The police apprehended one of the two persons who were allegedly smuggling sandalwood on Chikkakere bund in Kunigal town in Tumkur district on Saturday and recovered 50 kg of sandalwood pellets. Acting on a tip-off that some sandalwood trees near the Kunigal stud farm were felled, the police arrested Sathish (25) of Lakshmipura in Ramanagaram taluk of Bangalore Rural district. His alleged accomplice, Seena, escaped. According to the police, Sathish said the sandalwood pellets were being taken to Channapatna. — Staff Correspondent

`Prajamata,' portal relaunched

BANGALORE: The Kannada weekly, Prajamata, which was defunct for long, has been relaunched along with karnatakanewsnet.com, a news portal that focuses on Kannada and Karnataka-related news from all over the globe. Launching the portal, the Chairman of the Legislative Council, V.R. Sudarshan, described Ashok Babu, journalist and promoter of the project, as "a brave entrepreneur who does not allow failure to stop him from picking up and starting all over again." The Social Welfare Minister, Y. Nagappa, spoke. Mr. Babu said that when he had launched the portal for farmers 10 years ago, he had not anticipated that he would have to close it down. — Staff Reporter
