Saina makes final in two age sections

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: National junior champion Saina Newal of Andhra Pradesh has been making waves in the Krishna Khaitan memorial all India junior badminton tournament.

A pupil of Gopi Chand's academy in Hyderabad Saina did her famed mentor proud by rising to the finals of the under-19 and under-16 categories, both with facile wins.

The gritty girl made light of the fact that she had to go through the qualifying phase to cut through the opposition with an impressive streak — something that must have impressed the Chief national coach Vimal Kumar, who watched the action at the Nehru indoor stadium on Saturday.

There is some cheer for the host with Vijay Anand and Sharath Chandran, the top seed storming into the boys' under-19 doubles final.
