Pataudi, others likely to seek anticipatory bail

Special Correspondent

Raids continue, families seek time till June 15

CHANDIGARH: Raids by the Jhajjar district police in parts of Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh to arrest the former Indian cricket captain, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and six others, wanted in connection with the killing of a blackbuck, an endangered species, have so far failed to yield any results. The raids are still continuing, police sources said here on Saturday.

Even as the Haryana police is understood to have despatched a raiding party to Mumbai, sources said that the family members of the accused persons on Saturday sent a communication to the Jhajjar police seeking time till June 15 to appear before the Station House Officer as per the summons issued on last Tuesday. It may recalled that the deadline ended Friday evening and police parties raided several places associated with the accused persons.

The family members have pleaded in their communication that the accused could not obey the summons as these had been served at their residences in their absence. Therefore, they were seeking more time to present themselves before the police and join investigations.

Even though there was no word from the police officially whether the plea would be accepted, sources said that Mr.Pataudi and others named in the case registered under the Wildlife (Protection) Act would seek anticipatory bail from the special Environment Court at Faridabad on Monday. It was also being said that they could also file the application for the anticipatory bail before the Vacation Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court here. So far as the police are concerned, the raids to nab the accused persons would continue, according to official sources.

The Nawab of Pataudi and seven others face charges under the Wild life Protection Act for allegedly killing an endangered blackbuck and two rabbits in a wildlife sanctuary near Jhajjar. Only one person, identified as Madan Singh, has been arrested so far.
