Nine hurt in mishap

at NTPC unit

KARIMNAGAR: In a freak mishap, nine persons sustained severe burns when they were repairing a boiler plant to clear fly-ash which was jammed at the fifth unit of 500 MW at National Thermal Power Corporation in Ramagundam on Saturday.

Reports reaching here said that there was an explosion and the hot slurry ash fell on the workers who were working at the vicinity. The injured were Rajni Kumar, M. Sammaiah, Raji Reddy, Venkatesh, Rasheed, Bhupatih, Mallesh, G. Purushotham Raju and Satyanarayana. After first aid at the NTPC hospital, they were shifted to Hyderabad. - Staff Reporter

Ex-servicemen

allege raw deal

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Ex-Services League on Saturday urged the Government to take out all defence (CSD) canteens from the purview of VAT.

In a press release, M.R. Nath, State president of the Indian Ex-Services League said it was unfortunate that a raw deal was being meted out to ex-servicemen. Already the ex-servicemen quota in State and Central departments recruitment was being diverted by circumventing the rule position. - Staff Reporter

Teachers' demand

on transfers

HYDERABAD: Leaders of the State Teachers' Union asked the Government to commence inter-district transfers, which have been pending for last two years. The meeting felt that the inter-district transfers should be made an annual feature.

The meeting passed a resolution asking the Government to fix 10 years as longstanding period and to accord school assistant status to the teachers who held B.Com and B. Ed degrees. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The CPI State Council assistant secretary, K. Narayana, has been included in the party delegation that will tour China from June 13 to 21. The CPI general secretary, A.B.Bardhan, will lead the delegation which will include D.Pandyan (TN), Soni Thangamam (national council member) and Sindhu (Rajasthan), according to a press release issued by the council.

VSP contract workers

continue strike

VISAKHAPATNAM: The strike by contract workers in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant entered the 10th day on Saturday with 95 per cent of the 8,000 labourers staying away from work, the Steel Plant Contract Labour Union president, J. Ayodhya Ramu, said.

``More than 5,000 contract workers, along with their family members, assembled near the VSP gate on Friday, demanding quick settlement of their long pending grievances, including revision of their wages'' he said in a statement. - Special Correspondent

Probe into

electrocution

Sangareddy: The Chief General Manager (operations) of APCPDCL, C. Sudhakar Reddy, who is probing the death of a farmer and his son near Ganjiguda village of Medak district, told reporters on Saturday that there is a prima facie evidence of neglect by the Transco staff.

He pointed out that the linemen should have made a complaint against the contractor responsible for the road widening work between Ganjiguda and Chintalpalli for damaging the pole.

He also observed that the damaged portion should have been removed immediately.

Meanwhile, the Transco has announced an ex gratia of Rs. 20,000 each to the deceased. - Staff Reporter

CHITTOOR: Farmers in the district are eagerly waiting for groundnut and other seeds to sow as the district received rainfall on Friday.

The district authorities are making efforts to ensure supply seed in time in kharif. As many 51 sale counters were put up at different places in the district for the convenience of farmers. -Correspondent .

APCC chief for

Kamalapuram

CUDDAPAH: The APCC president, K. Keshava Rao, will visit Kamalapuram on June 14 as part of his santhi yatra, the Congress in-charge for Kamalapuram constituency, P. Narasimha Reddy, said here on Saturday.

Dr. Keshava Rao would participate in the santhi yatra from Yerraguntla to Chilamakur in Kamalapuram segment, he told newsmen at Yerraguntla.

Five injured

in road mishap

NELLORE: Five persons received injuries following a collision between a lorry and a passenger vehicle on the national highway, near Kagitalapur village of Manubolu mandal on Friday night.

The incident occurred when the occupants of the passenger vehicle were on their way to Tirumala. One of the seriously injured has been shifted to Nellore.

Bus service

launched

NELLORE: The local MLA, Anam Vivekananda Reddy, inaugurated an air-conditioned bus service from Nellore to Secunderabad, at the RTC complex, Nellore, on Saturday afternoon.

The bus leaves Nellore at 9.30 p.m. and reaches Secunderabad at 7.30 a.m. the next day.

Badminton academy

for Khammam

KHAMMAM: The Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) has sanctioned badminton academy for Khammam, according to the Khammam District Badminton Association secretary, P. Yugandhar, on Saturday. Mr. Yugandhar informed that 10 boys and 10 girls would be given coaching by the academy. The selections are scheduled to be held on June 15 and 16. However, the SAAP was requested to put off the selection to June 24 and 25.

The badminton association of India annual calendar will be released by K . Ch. Punnaiah Chowdhury, joint secretary, Badminton Association of India, and Secretary, Andhra Pradesh Badminton Association, here on Sunday, he informed.

Collector's assurance

SANGAREDDY: The Medak district Collector, B. Venkatesam, on Saturday assured the family members of Chinna Anjaiah who along with his son was electrocuted on Friday evening, of all possible help. The Collector announced a house site and two acres of land for Anjaiah's kin and a job for any eligible person in the family. However, the Transco officials in Sangareddy refuted allegations of complacency and said that the villagers never complained about the high-tension wire lying in Anjaiah's field.

Free medical camp held

ADILABAD: A free medical camp was conducted at the Ranadivenagar colony slum area which was organised by the Government employees wing of the Kula Vivaksha Porata Samiti. The Adilabad district Collector, R. Subba, exhorted organisations to conduct more such camps in rural areas. Health aspect was of utmost importance to the poor, he observed.

Two killed in road mishap

NALGONDA: Two persons were killed and 14 others injured when the Bolero in which they were travelling was hit by a lorry at Komarabanda in Kodad mandal in the early hours of Saturday.

According to the police sources, the victims were on their way to Hyderabad from Chillakallu and Shairmohammadpet in Krishna district.
