BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa Government has decided to increase the financial incentive for inter-caste marriages and ban the use of the word "Harijan". The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Orissa Scheduled Caste Welfare Advisory Board here on Friday. The meeting, chaired by the Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, also decided to reserve 38 per cent seats for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students in all Government-run Plus Two and degree colleges. The Board decided to increase the financial incentive for inter-caste marriages from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 10,000. If a boy from a higher caste marries a girl belonging to the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes, the couple will get a reward of Rs. 10,000. The same would also hold good in case of a higher caste girl marrying a boy from a lower caste. The reward amount of Rs. 3,000 had remained constant since 1981. The meeting also reviewed the issue of pending cases of atrocities against Scheduled Caste people. The number of such cases now stands at 7,418. A proposal for inclusion of six sub-castes in the Schduled Caste list was also discussed at the meeting.
