Ex-servicemen to take out Collectorate march

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha district committee of the Kerala State Ex-Services League (KSESL) will organise a march of ex-servicemen to the Collectorate here on Wednesday in protest against the implementation of additional taxes on essential commodities being distributed through military canteens in the State.

At a press conference here, the KSESL Alappuzha district unit president P. Gopinathan Nair and secretary K. Bhargavan Pillai said the Government began implementing additional tax from April 1 in connection with the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT). As a result, the prices of commodities being distributed through the canteens shot up, Mr. Nair said. The prices of several commodities being distributed through the military canteens were higher than their prices in margin free markets at present, he said.

Mr. Nair said Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram after discussions with the leaders of Indian Ex-Services League had said the States were free to withdraw additional taxes implemented on goods sold through military canteens as part of VAT. Many states, including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, withdrew the additional taxes following Mr. Chidambaram's statement.

Mr. Nair said though the KSESL leaders met State Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman to discuss the issue, he abused the KSESL leaders and rejected their demands. In the context, the ex-servicemen in the State will organise protests till the Government revokes the taxes, Mr. Nair said.

He added that the ex-servicemen in Alappuzha would hold a dharna before the Collectorate after the march on Wednesday.
