NEW DELHI: The Delhi Medical Council (DMC) and the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) have announced formation of a joint action committee to combat the problem of quackery in the Capital. According to the DMC president, Dr. A. K. Aggarwal, one of the main purposes for which the Council was formed was to make sure that no unqualified person practised the modern system of medicine in the Capital. "The joint action committee will liaison with the Delhi Government, State Health Department and also with the councils of other systems of medicine and come out with a defined time-bound anti-quackery policy,'' said Dr. Aggarwal. Also present at the meeting was the Director of Health Services, Dr. Anil Mehra, who said the Directorate was committed to intensifying its anti-quackery awareness campaign. Explaining the plan of action of the joint action committee, the DMA president, Dr. K. K. Aggarwal, said: "The committee will also propose amendments to the DMA Act by which powers would be conferred on the councils to initiate punitive action against quacks by imposing fines, besides the legal course as provided in the present enactment. Under the present law, a quack if caught is fined no less than Rs. 20,000 or imprisonment of three years or both. We realise that this is not adequate and that it needs to be enhanced.'' Pointing to the fact that treatment from quacks was harmful, DMC Secretary S. K. Khatri said: "Treatment through quacks often suppresses symptoms by which the underlying disease can spread and become uncontrollable. Also, over 100 show-cause notices have been issued by the DMC to quacks and many of them are facing prosecution.''
