BANGALORE: A policeman rescued 20 calves that were bundled into a goods vehicle and were being transported to the beef market in Shivajinagar here on Saturday. The police said around 9 a.m. K. Nagaraju, a traffic constable attached to the Cubbon Park traffic police station, tried to stop a goods vehicle on St. Mark's Road, off Bishop Cottons Girls High School. But the driver sped away. On reaching Anil Kumble circle, another traffic constable, Chowdappa, who was on duty at the junction, heard animal cries from the goods vehicle and stopped it. He found 20 calves bundled into the vehicle. One of the two persons transporting the animals ran away after the police stopped the vehicle. The other, Barkhath (20), told the police that they were taking the calves from Chandapur, off Hosur Road, to the beef market in Shivajinagar. The calves were handed over to animal rights activists. They said the calves would be sent to a "goshala." The Cubbon Park police have registered a case and taken Barkath and the vehicle driver, Manjunath, into custody for questioning.
