DANGEROUS: Bamboo poles used as a substitute for regular electric poles in Nagarbhavi Layout in Bangalore. Photo: K. Murali Kumar
BANGALORE: The over 500 residents of Nagarbhavi Layout developed by the BDA during 2000-01 badly lacks basic amenities, according to R. Ashok, MLA for Uttarahalli under which Assembly constituency the layout comes. Most residents moved in during 2001 hoping that the BDA will improve the conditions there. A group of presspersons were taken round the area on Saturday. It was found that most homes drew electricity directly from makeshift poles which are connected by a maze of wires to a few poles erected by BESCOM. There are no transformers or underground cables in the layout, the residents complained. "We have no metered power supply and BESCOM collects arbitrary sums each month," the residents complained. They said that they met successive BDA Commissioners more than 20 times and what they got were only assurances.
Mr. Ashok alleged that the area reserved for green belt had been encroached upon.
Stir threat
The State unit of the BJP has given a month's time to the BDA to improve the amenities in Nagarbhavi Layout and warned that an agitation would be launched if the authority did not respond.
According to BDA officials many such outlying areas will have improved amenities provided under the new Master Plan that is to be cleared by the Government.
