Bitta flays clemency plea

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The All-India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) chief, Maninderjit Singh Bitta, on Saturday criticised "some members" of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) for having moved clemency requests for a convict in the 1993 attack on him outside the Indian Youth Congress office here on Raisina Road.

At a press conference here, Mr. Bitta accused "some DSGMC leaders" of "extending support to the dreaded terrorist, Davinderpal Singh Bhullar, an accused in the bomb blast outside the IYC premises".

Mr. Bitta commended the Delhi police for having arrested Jagtar Singh Hawara, the most wanted Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) chief for operations in India, and urged the Government to honour those involved in the operation. He said if such terrorists were allowed to move about freely, they would again try to create disturbance in the country.

Stating that attempts to revive "Khalistan" movement could not have been possible without the support of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Mr. Bitta said ISI agents were trying to whip up communal passions with the help of terrorists.

Mr. Bitta also criticised the Punjab administration for its casual approach in reviewing the cases of terrorists presently lodged in their jails. He also came down heavily on the Punjab Government's decision to revoke the "black list" of people whose entry into the country was banned for their links with terrorists.

"These people operate from the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany and Canada. If they are allowed in, they would spread their tentacles here also, which might cost the country dearly," he said, adding that the release of terrorists lodged in Punjab jails was also not justified as they were behind the killing of thousands of innocent people.
