Capital hit by

power cuts

NEW DELHI: Several parts of the Capital were hit by unscheduled load-shedding for long hours on Saturday. Almost the entire East Delhi was affected in the afternoon as the circuit between Badarpur thermal power station and Noida developed some snag around 2 p.m.

Though there was no problem in the Northern Grid, Transco had to resort to load-shedding of 91 MW due to the snag and for carrying out restoration work. In other areas, the crisis was mainly due to "local faults''.

The peak demand touched 3,129 MW during the day.

Meanwhile, BSES Yamuna has informed that power supply would remain affected at Asaf Ali Road on Sunday, while there would be load-shedding during the day on Monday in the Mansa Ram Park area.

Repair causes

traffic jam

NEW DELHI: East Delhi residents had a tough time reaching their homes on Saturday evening due to a massive traffic jam on Vikas Marg caused by the ongoing repair work at Lok Nayak Setu.

Traffic officials informed that only one carriageway of the bridge was opened to traffic due to the repair work. This resulted in traffic snarls on other connecting roads and all vehicles going towards East Delhi were diverted towards Nizamuddin bridge through Ring Road.

As the repair work would go on till Monday morning, commuters have been advised to avoid the route.

On Friday too commuters had faced a similar problem and were stranded for over an hour on Vikas Marg and Nizamuddin bridge due to barricades put up by the police as part of a routine security drill, "Operation Black Rose", launched to check their alertness.

Three killed in mishap

NEW DELHI: Three young men were killed when the car in which they were travelling rammed into cable drums lying on Todapur Road in South-West Delhi on Friday night.

Mohan, who works for a Punjab-based company in Patel Nagar, was taking his three friends, Pramod, Vipin and Jeetender, in his Toyota car when tragedy struck. The car hit the cable drums at 10-25 p.m. and turned over.

While Mohan's three friends were killed on the spot, he has admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Lohia Hospital in a serious condition. All four occupants of the car were residents of Krishna Kunj Colony in South-West Delhi.

Held for robberies

NEW DELHI: Five Bangladeshi nationals allegedly involved in robbery cases were arrested at Sarai Rohilla in North Delhi over the weekend. A country-made firearm was allegedly recovered from them.

The accused, Aslam, Mohammad Babu, Anwar, Almamun and Mohammad Niyamiyan, had gathered in a park at Sarai Rohilla when the police raided the place and arrested them. The police claimed that the accused were planning to commit robbery in the house of a businessman.

`Criminal' arrested

NEW DELHI: A criminal carrying a reward of Rs. 5,000 on his head has been arrested by the Special Staff of the Central Delhi police.

Acting on a tip-off that a person wanted by the Uttar Pradesh police in four murder cases would come to Ajmeri Gate, the police laid a trap and arrested the suspect. During interrogation, he identified himself as Shoba Ram, a resident of Muradpur in Uttar Pradesh. He allegedly confessed to his involvement in murder cases.
