Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara, about an Indian army officer and a Pakistani girl, won awards for Best Make-up, Best Music Director, Best Story, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Picture. When Chopra received the best director award, he said, "I will cherish this for the rest of my life because it is the last award I'm going to receive in the director category."

Rani Mukherjee won for her supporting role in the film while Abhishek Bachchan beat his dad Amitabh to the Best Supporting actor award for his performance in Yuva.

The ceremony, held at the Amsterdam Arena, was compered by Shahrukh Khan who made a dramatic entrance on a horse-drawn carriage.

Abhishek Bachchan was the darling of the evening. His first song was Bunty aur Babli, the one his father does in the movie of the same name. Madan Mohan was posthumously honoured with the best music director award for Veer-Zaara. Two days after the Netherlands named a variety of tulip after her, Aishwarya Rai bagged a special Global Indian Media Personality award.
