Delay in implementation of tourism project

K.P. Pushparaj

Kumbala as model tourist panchayat

  • Master plan for implementation of project prepared
  • Fish-landing facility and renovation of fish-processing sheds
  • Conducted trips to pilgrim destinations in Karnataka

KASARAGOD: Despite Minister for Fisheries Domenic Presentation declaring Kumbala panchayat as the second model tourist panchayat in the State six months ago, there has not been any progress in the project implementation.

The project envisages the development of the panchayat as a model tourist panchayat in a phased manner. A master plan for the implementation of the Rs.3.58-crore project has been prepared in consultation with the panchayat representatives, department officials and voluntary organisations. A pilot study in this regard was conducted by K. Muraleedhara Menon and the report submitted to the Government prior to the declaration of the panchayat as a model tourist village.

The development of infrastructure conducive for tourism promotion will form part of the first phase of the project. The project will not only be tailor-made to suit the environment, cultural heritage and lifestyles of the people of the panchayat but would also take into account employment opportunities for the residents.

    Hygienic environment

The clean-Kumbala project envisages a cleaner, hygienic environment, pure drinking water facilities, waste disposal system, organic farming methods and traditional industries, among others things. Mechanism to check inflow of saline water into the Kumbla river will also be installed. Development of fish landing facility and renovation of fish processing sheds are also on the cards.

`Parthisubha Kala Gramam' will be set up at Ambaladukka to promote art and culture, especially the traditional art forms of northern Kerala such as Yakshaganam, Theyyam and Mappila art forms.

A proposal to develop Kumbla town as a Midway Pilgrim-cum-Tourist Centre so as to facilitate a resting place for the pilgrims and tourists travelling to the neighbouring Karnataka State is also being considered.

The project also envisages conducted trips to various pilgrimage destinations in Karnataka.
