KOZHIKODE: The State should focus on diverse sectors, such as health and education, apart from industrial development, experts in development said at a seminar here on Saturday. They were speaking at the business session of the event. The Department of Information and Public Relations organised the seminar titled "Non-resident Indians (NRIs) and development." P.R. Gopinathan Nair, Honorary Professor, Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvananthapuram, said development should not be confined to that of industries. Diverse sectors could be considered since income levels had risen in the State. Dr. Nair, who has studied emigration, remittances and development, said it was unfair to ask NRIs to become entrepreneurs. The Government should, instead, use their huge bank deposits for development. The annual remittances made by them amounted to Rs. 18,000 crores. The non-resident emigrant accounts contributed between 40 and 48 per cent of the deposits in banks. Lakhs of people were going abroad through unauthorised recruitment agencies. Most of the problems faced by NRIs would be solved if Norka-Roots were to implement its programmes, he added.
