DEVELOPMENT VENTURE: Water Resources Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan inaugurating Travancore Rural Development Producer Company in Adoor on Sunday.
PATHANAMTHITTA: Minister for Water Resources and Forests Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has stressed the role of private cooperative ventures in resolving the problems facing the State's rural agriculture sector, especially in the backdrop of globalisation and liberalisation. The Minister was inaugurating the Travancore Rural Development Producer Company Limited (Travanco) in Adoor this forenoon. Presiding over the inaugural meeting, Travanco chairman and veteran trade union leader M. Sukumara Pillai said the company replaces a co-operative society in the backdrop of the recently amended Central Cooperative Act. Production, procurement and marketing of agriculture produces and agro-based products are the main activities of the company. It has opened 50 latex procurement centres in Kottayam, Kollam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts, he said. The company would avoid middlemen in order to end the exploitation of farmers. It would venture into cultivation of medicinal plants and other herbs, besides launching mutual benefit funds and credit facilities for the farmers, Mr. Pillai added. Adoor MP Chengara Surendran, State Planning Board member Pelippose Thomas, CPI district secretary Mundappally Thomas and assistant secretary A.P. Jayan, among others, spoke on the occasion.
