GUWAHATI: The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has served a show-cause notice to the founder-president and former Chief Minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, asking him why disciplinary action should not be initiated against him for his `anti-party activities.' Mr. Mahanta has been asked to reply to the notice in 10 days. AGP president Brindaban Goswami told reporters on Sunday that the steering committee took strong objection to "statements issued by Mr. Mahanta against the party in a section of the press" and felt such statements would lower the party's image in the eyes of the people. Mr. Mahanta had alleged that some leaders who split the AGP with the help of the Congress in 1991 were now calling the shots in the party.
Second notice
This is the second time Mr. Mahanta has been served a show-cause notice after Mr. Goswami took over as party chief. The former Chief Minister was served a notice last year for his statements against the party. He was also stripped of all party posts and banned from campaigning outside his Assembly constituency. Although the ban was withdrawn later, the party posts enjoyed by Mr. Mahanta were not restored. Mr. Mahanta quit as AGP president in September 2001 in the midst of a bigamy allegation after the party's debacle in the May 2001 Assembly polls. Mr. Goswami, an arch rival of Mr. Mahanta, was elevated to the post of party president on September 6, 2001 at a general body meeting. Mr. Mahanta, however, denied the charge and described it as a conspiracy to malign him and the party.
