P. S. Suryanarayana
SINGAPORE: As the Philippines celebrated on Sunday the 107th anniversary of independence, amid a "full security alert" against an Opposition campaign to unseat President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, she maintained that "no one will deter me from my mission". Political rallies have been held for several days in a row, most conspicuously in Metro Manila. While some pomp and pageantry marked the official celebrations on Sunday, there were no reports of any untoward incidents from across the Philippines until nightfall. Accused by the authorities of being in collusion with some former military officers and marginal dissidents still in service, the Opposition leaders have called for a change at the country's helm by citing allegations of an electoral fraud by the President as also some corruption charges against her close relatives. The allegations, relating to lottery kickbacks, are now before the Senate.
Pledge to move ahead
In an obvious reference to the Opposition campaign, Ms. Arroyo said: "I have felt the political heat, but I am still in the kitchen. I am still in the kitchen because that is where I belong to continue to make the tough choices to turn this economy around". Addressing the National Day reception, the President criticised the Opposition for living in "a land of make-believe".
