MOSCOW: A terrorist bomb attack derailed a Chechnya-bound train out of Moscow, injuring several passengers and crew. The bomb went off on the tracks in front of the locomotive of a Moscow-Grozny train around 7 a.m. on Sunday. The blast had a force equivalent to three to five kilograms of TNT and left a crater about one meter-wide on the tracks, officials said. The driver had time to apply the brakes, but the locomotive and six carriages still derailed though they did not flip over as the train was travelling at a slow speed after leaving the Uzunovo station 150 km south of Moscow. Eight persons were hospitalised with various injuries and 42 were given first aid and discharged. Investigators found evidence that it was a terrorist attack. A home-made detonating device was found about 50 metres from the tracks and electric cables had been wired to one of the rails. The train conductor reported seeing two men walking away fast after the explosion. The attack came on a national holiday, the Day of Russia, hours before President Vladimir Putin hosted a reception in the Kremlin. This is the first terror hit outside Chechnya since last Autumn when a series of attacks, that included the seige of a school in Beslan, near Chechnya, and twin plane bombings, claimed about 450 lives. A senior Interior Ministry official said last week that security was being stepped up at airports, train stations and other public places to prevent acts of terrorism during the summer holiday season.
