KOCHI: Kerala needs more hotel rooms to accommodate the ever-increasing number of foreign and domestic tourists, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said. He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association's (KHRA) Institute of Hotel Management at Vazhakkulam, near Perumbavoor, on Sunday. "We need rooms in all classes, including the star category. The private sector has a major role on this front. On its part, the State Government will make available infrastructure such as good roads, power and water supply." Entrepreneurs must ensure that tourism development does not pollute the environment and disturb the ecological balance, he said. Former Tourism Minister K.V. Thomas had initiated many well thought-out tourism schemes in the State, resulting in tourism boom, Mr. Chandy said. Delivering the presidential address, T.H. Mustafa, MLA, said a tourism circuit connecting Aluva, Malayatoor and Kalady, which are located on the banks of the Periyar, could be developed. A bridge connecting Madampally and Sreemoolanagaram will soon become a reality, he added. Welcoming the gathering, the State president of the KHRA, K. Kuriakose, said there were over a lakh hoteliers in the State. The sector provided employment to a large number of people. Among others present at the function were Minister for Fisheries and Sports Dominic Presentation; P.C. Thomas, MP; MLAs K. Mohammed Ali, Saju Paul, K. Babu and V.D. Satheesan; and district panchayat president John P. Mani. The institute is being started keeping in mind the job opportunities in the hospitality sector.
