THRISSUR: A former Chief Engineer of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) T.V. Jacob, who is a member of the teaching faculty of the Loughborough University, the United Kingdom, has suggested that the State should strive to optimise its existing water supply system before trying to start new ones or even augmentation schemes. Mr. Jacob, who is also a member of the expert committees appointed by the Central and State Governments, made this suggestion while delivering a talk at the Institution of Engineers (India) Thrissur local centre recently. According to Mr. Jacob at least 30 per cent increase in quantity of water is possible from treatment plants and the pipeline distribution systems, with less than 30 per cent cost of the same quantity of water for a new system, Mr Jacob said.
Simple innovation
He said that in 1980, when he was in service, he had demonstrated that nearly 18 MLD (million litres per day) of additional water could be conveyed from the Aluva treatment plant to Ernakulam through simple innovations to reduce pressure on the large pumps. Through this innovation it was possible to convert the then existing intermittent water supply to continuous supply.
`Optimise use of chemicals'
Similarly, optimal use of chemical for purifying water in the Aluva treatment plant could lead to a saving of Rs. 1 crore annually then, he said. Mr. Jacob suggested the launching of a scheme for optimisation at a much lesser cost than the proposed augmentation scheme. He also suggested the constitution of a team of dedicated and competent engineers for conducting studies on the possibilities of optimisation of the existing water supply systems in the State.
