KOCHI: A sum of Rs.4.63 crores has been sanctioned for implementing various projects under the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) in the district. The campaign, part of the Restructured Central Rural Sanitation Programme (RCRSP) being implemented from 1998, began in the district in 2003-04. The four-year project is estimated to cost Rs.10.58 crores. This year, 17,856 latrines will be built in the district at a cost of Rs.3.58 crores. Of this amount, Rs.1.78 crores will be earmarked through the village panchayats, Rs.83 lakhs from district and block panchayats and Rs.1.07 crores from the TSC. According to an initial survey conducted as part of the TSC, 54,585 persons are in need of latrine facility in the district. A total number of 18,539 latrines were completed in the district till May 31 this year. Rs.75 lakhs has been earmarked for Information, Education and Communication (IEC) programmes in the district. As part of the IEC projects, thousands of women have been given awareness regarding sanitation through self-help groups. The second phase of the sanitation campaign through neighbourhood groups will be held from June 20 to 25. Rs.30 lakhs will be spent this year for the construction of 150 latrines in schools, as part of the school sanitation campaign. High schools, upper primary schools and primary schools in the district will be allotted Rs.1,000 and Rs.500 as Critical Gap Filling Fund.
Community complexes
The District Sanitation Committee, headed by District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, also decided to speed up the construction of child-friendly latrines and community complexes in places where people are employed in large numbers. Sanction for 23 complexes has been obtained.
