LONDON: Britain's Hindu Human Rights Association has called for an apology from a French shoe company for using an image of Lord Ram on a line of women's designer shoes. The association, which planned a rally outside the French embassy in central London, welcomed the company's decision to withdraw the offensive shoes after protests from Hindu groups, but said it must offer a "public apology." It also demanded damages from it in the form of a donation to a Hindu charity to make "amends" for the hurt caused to Hindu sentiments. In a statement, the association said that despite protests western companies continued to use images of Hindu deities in a "degrading" and "offensive" manner. The French shoe-retailer Minelli's decision to use "sacred" images of Lord Ram on designer footwear showed the company's insensitivity to Hindu religious feelings, it said. "Such trivialisation of Hinduism leads directly or indirectly to abuse of Hindus the world over," the association said demanding an inquiry into how such a product came to be sold in the first place. Hindu rights activists said there were also other issues relating to the treatment of Hindus in France. "France is a country that has had trouble even recognising Hinduism as a valid religion. The Hindu community finds it increasingly difficult even to get planning permission to build and maintain their temples. We also have reports of anti-Hindu bias in the French educational and media establishments," a spokesperson said, urging the French Government to look into the grievances of the community.
